A new pavilion will be added to the construction of the Russel and Evelyn Fahl Aquatics Center in Columbia City thanks to a $100,000 donation from Steel Dynamics Inc., officials announced Thursday.
The new Steel Dynamics Pavilion will house birthday parties, business gatherings, reunions, and possibly small concerts once the project is completed, officials said.
“I am extremely excited about this major contribution toward the pavilion,” Park Superintendent Mark Green said in a statement. “It's great to see a local business like Steel Dynamics help support our community in such a significant way. This pavilion will be a great addition to the Russel and Evelyn Fahl Aquatic Center.”
The pavilion was originally left out of the plans due to the additional funds that needed to be raised, officials said. With the Steel Dynamics gift, the pavilion will be added back into the construction plans. If the construction runs smoothly during the winter, the new aquatic center could be open during the summer next year, officials said.
Groundbreaking for the aquatic center was in late August at the Burnworth Pool site, 325 N. Wayne St.
The $4.2 million aquatics center project developed from a planning process that started in 2013. The Columbia City Park Board moved ahead with the center in late 2015. The aquatics center will replace the 60-year-old Burnworth Pool with new amenities including two water slides, a 25-meter competition pool, a vortex channel and lily pad walk.
Major project donors include the Russel and Evelyn Fahl family, Dekko Foundation, Indiana Economic Development Corp., the Northeast Indiana Regional Development Authority and many private contributions.
