Dane Miller, a biomedical engineer and entrepreneur sometimes known as "Mr. Biomet," died today, company officials confirmed.
Miller, one of four founders of Biomet Inc., was CEO of the Warsaw-based orthopedic devices manufacturer from its founding in 1977 until 2006.
He cited communication issues with the board for his resignation, which was described at the time as abrupt. Miller remained on the board, however, and consulted for the company.
Jeff Binder, Biomet's president and CEO, issued a statement about the man he called "a true pioneer."
"It is impossible in one short statement to give justice to his impact on our company, on our industry, and on the communities where we operate – especially Warsaw and Winona Lake, Indiana," he said. "It is also impossible to describe adequately Dane's impact on the lives of our team members and on the members of the orthopedic community with whom he worked and developed friendships over many years."
