Salvation Army collecting school supplies

Frank Gray | The Journal Gazette

The Salvation Army is launching its annual Tools for School drive to collect school supplies for families that are struggling financially.

The drive gathered enough school supplies for 1,300 students last year. This year's goal is 1,500.

About 30 percent of families in this area are still struggling and need assistance assembling school supplies, Salvation Srmy officials said. Supplies also go well beyond the traditional spiral notebooks, loseleaf paper and pencils and pens. Teachers ask that students have disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizers and tissues in addition to book bags, erasers, folders, glue sticks, rulers, protractors and other gadgets.

Barrels will be placed in front of all Walgreens stores and the Salvation Army, in addition to private sites, for donations.

Cash donations are accepted. People can donate online, by calling 744-2311, or by mailing a donation to the Salvation Army.
