The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo is officially 50 years old.
More than 400 guests, along with zoo staff and city officials were treated to cake Wednesday as the Fort Wayne Children's Choir wished the zoo well with a rendition of "Happy Birthday to Zoo."
"It's always amazing how time goes by, to realize that wow, this really has been around for 50 years," Cheryl Piropato, the zoo's communications director, said. "We had a great turnout, of course a beautiful day after all the rain we've had does not hurt. It's always exciting to see all the support we have from the community and we're so, so grateful for that."
Wednesday's celebration is part of a season-long series of events celebrating the zoo's milestone birthday. Among those events is this year's Three Rivers Festival Parade, the theme of which is "Here's to Zoo."
