Son faces charges in beating of parents

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

An older couple remained hospitalized Thursday after they were beaten by their son Wednesday, police said.

Scott Leroy Ruse, 50, was in the Allen County Jail on Thursday, charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of attempted robbery.

Ruse is accused of beating his parents and stealing their car from their Homestead Road home.

Gene L. Ruse, 75, was in critical condition and Sandra L. Ruse, 71, was in stable condition Thursday, according to Fort Wayne police.

Police were called to the couple's home at 3309 Homestead Road about 3 p.m. Wednesday after dispatchers received multiple hang-up calls from the home. Police learned that Scott Ruse had fled in his parents' Chevrolet Equinox, which police tracked using OnStar, a device that was used to disable the car.

Ruse was caught on Indiana 9 in Whitley County before 4:30 p.m. and taken into custody without incident.

Court documents show Ruse lived on Fifth Street in Fort Wayne and was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery in January. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail but given credit for having already served that time in jail.
