IPFW cheer coach accused of theft

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

Julie Lebamoff, head coach of the cheerleading squad at IPFW, was arrested after allegedly shoplifting two dresses, a shirt and handbag from the Von Maur store at Jefferson Pointe.

Lebamoff, 53, of Woodburn was pulled over by Fort Wayne police about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Calhoun Street and West Jefferson Boulevard and caught with the stolen store items totaling $1,089, according to court documents.

Police were called by the store's loss prevention unit, which said Lebamoff had taken the handbag, shirt and two dresses, concealed them and left the store. Loss prevention supplied a description and license plate number of Lebamoff's vehicle, court records said.

Lebamoff told to the officer who took her to Allen County Lockup that she had taken the items and not paid for them, court documents said.

Lebamoff, a 1982 New Haven High School grad, coached the cheerleading squad at Woodlan High School for 15 years. In 2015, she was named the state's Cheer Coach of the Year and took over the cheer squad at IPFW.

Lebamoff was charged with theft and released on her own recognizance Wednesday.

It was unclear Thursday night whether IPFW had taken action because of Lebamoff's arrest.
