Possible drowning on Lake Wawasee investigated

Journal Gazette

Authorities were investigating the possible drowning death early today of a 13-year-old Elkhart boy on Lake Wawasee.

Indiana conservation officers said the boy's mother went to check on her son who had gone to bed at a home on North Southshore Drive in Syracuse. The woman was unable to find her son around 11:55 p.m. and asked her husband for help.

The husband checked the area on foot while his wife checked the house. The husband then checked the pier located at the home. After searching for about 30 minutes the husband was able to find his son submerged in the water near the home, officials said.

Local agencies performed CPR and life saving techniques, but were unable to revive the boy. The Kosciusko Sheriff’s Department, Syracuse Police Department, Syracuse Fire Department and Indiana State Police assisted at the scene.

This incident is currently an open investigation by Indiana conservation officers.
