Body pulled from river

Authorities retrieved a body from the St. Marys River just southwest of downtown Tuesday night.

The body wasn't identified, but neighbors and family members said the body is that of 20-year-old Santino Stiles. He was found near the Hale Avenue bridge near Brooklyn Avenue and Taylor Street.

About 6:45 p.m., Eric Slaughter said he called police to report a body face down close to the shore near the bridge. Slaughter and other said Stiles had been missing since Saturday.

The body was first seen by Adorean Rogers, 13, who was walking home from football practice. He called his mother, Dorinda Born, who was with him as he spoke to police.

Family and friends hovered as police prepared to bring the body out of the water. Samantha Hirshey said she went to the riverbank and saw bubbles, and hoped he was still living.

“There wasn't no movement,” Hirshey said.

Fort Wayne police, Fort Wayne Fire Department and Department of Natural Resources retrieved the body.

Relatives said Stiles suffered seizures, but he loved the river where he often went fishing with his father.
