Contractor unearths human bones

The Journal Gazette

Human bones were unearthed during utility work Tuesday morning.

A private contractor uncovered the bones while burying a power line in the 1400 block of West Washington Boulevard on Tuesday, a statement from the Allen County coroner's office said.

It said a sampling of the bones was collected and a local pathologist was able to confirm that the bones were human. Because of the condition of the bones, it was determined by the coroner that the bones had been buried for an extended period of time.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Historic Preservation was notified and the site was visited by a representative from that department, the coroner said.

After discussion, it was decided the bones would be reburied into the grave site and the utility work would be moved to another location.

The grave site will be logged and marked with the Office of Historical Preservation as a burial site, and protected according to state law.
