Man accused of raping 3 women

Allegedly lured to room, held at knife point

A knife-wielding man has been named in three recent rape cases involving separate victims.

Darvon Lawan Smith, 41, of the 900 block of East Washington Boulevard, was arrested Tuesday on three counts of rape and three counts of criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon.

One of the women identified as a victim in court documents walked into Smith's apartment on Sept. 18 about 1:30 a.m. She set down her duffle bag, and Smith immediately wanted to search it because he “needed to be sure she wasn't a cop.”

Then he backed her into the bedroom of his apartment as if she were a dog, staring at her, stepping close to her and into her space, she told police.

Then he pulled a pocketknife and held the blade toward her while demanding that she “take it off,” court documents said.

She didn't want to take off her shirt because she didn't want anyone to see her “tracks” from injecting herself with drugs, but she complied with this demand and demands for sex, fearing for her life, she told police.

She left the next morning after his demands for sex and “to cuddle.” They walked downtown and eventually parted ways, court records said.

Another victim in court documents told police she showed up Aug. 19 about 11 p.m. after Smith responded to an ad she had posted for a massage.

When she entered his apartment, he pulled out a steak knife. “If you don't abide by the rules, I'll split you from ear to ear,” Smith told her, according to court records.

After he had sex with her, he ordered her to take a shower. Certain that Smith intended to stab and murder her, she came out of the shower and put her fingers into Smith's eyes and shoved him backwards. She had just enough time to move the television that was blocking the front door, court documents said.

Smith grabbed her and pulled her into the room. She pushed her fingers into Smith's eyes a second time and was able to escape, fleeing into the hallway and yelling “rape,” court records said

She was let into an apartment by a woman and given a shirt to wear. Smith burst into the apartment and with that, the woman climbed head first out of the living room window, falling four stories to the ground below. She suffered two facial fractures, liver and kidney lacerations and wrist fractures, court documents said.

A third victim reported to Smith's apartment building after arranging a rendezvous through Backpage, an online dating site. This, on Sept. 2, was an “appointment,” court records said

Once inside his apartment, he pulled a knife from his waist band and pointed it in her direction. As he did in previous encounters, he pushed the television in front of the door to prevent escape, court records said.

He ordered her to go into a bedroom and remove her clothing. She complied, but told Smith no and that she wanted to leave, court documents said.

She told police she was terrified and “saw her life pass before her eyes” as he proceeded to have sex with her.

Court documents do not say how the third victim got away.

Smith was being held at the Allen County Jail in lieu of $105,000 bail, according to a jail spokesman.
