Journal Gazette

The death of a Noble County Jail inmate Wednesday is being investigated by Indiana State Police.

Markus Neal Middleton, 23, of Albion was found unconscious in his cell during routine cell checks about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Confinement officers entered the cell and performed life-saving measures until Noble County EMS could arrive. Medics tried to revive Middleton, but he was declared dead at 9:01 p.m., police said.

Police said Middelton, incarcerated since Sept. 11, was the only inmate in the cell and foul play is not suspected.

The Noble County Sheriff's Department and coroner's office are assisting in the investigation.

Hunter hurt in fall from tree stand

A Ligonier hunter was injured Thursday morning when he fell nearly 16 feet from a tree stand to the ground in Kosciusko County, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said.

Jimmy Ritchie, 49, was flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne with leg and back injuries after the 7 a.m. fall, conservation officers said.

Ritchie was not wearing a safety harness at the time of the fall, officials said.

North Webster EMS and Fire, Parkview Samaritan and the county sheriff's department also assisted.
