Death of man in September ruled homicide

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

The death of a New Haven man who was found beaten just north of downtown Fort Wayne in September was ruled a homicide Friday by the Allen County coroner's office.

Michael Rodney Wilcher's death brings this year's homicide total in the county to 30.

Friday was the first time authorities issued a notice about his death.

On Sept. 21, Wilcher, 51, of New Haven was found lying in the 400 block of Huffman Street near Wells Street.

The coroner said Wilcher was suffering from blunt force trauma when he was discovered about 11 p.m.

Wilcher was taken to a hospital where his condition declined and he died Sept. 23. He died from injuries to the head, according to the coroner.

Allen County saw a record 49 homicides last year.
