Girl talked down from Whitley courthouse

Journal Gazette

A girl threatened to jump from the Whitley County Courthouse roof Tuesday night before negotiators talked her to safety, police said.

Just before 6:30 p.m., Columbia City police received a 911 call reporting a person in dark clothing on the courthouse roof. Officers arrived to find a juvenile girl standing on the ledge, threatening to jump, police said.

Police requested assistance from Allen County Sheriff's Department negotiators and the Bowen Center. A Columbia City Bowen Center counselor assisted with speaking to the girl until negotiators arrived.

Just after 8 p.m., negotiators were able to talk the girl to safety without further incident, police said.

The girl made it to the roof by climbing construction scaffolding that was in place for repairs to the courthouse, police said.
