Buggy driver critical after struck by vehicle

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

The driver of a horse and buggy was in critical condition after being hit from behind by a teenage girl trying to pass him Tuesday morning, police said.

The girl, driving a white Jeep, tried to drive around the buggy but struck it after swerving back into her lane at Grabill and Page roads, said Steve Stone, Allen County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

Stone said the girl was westbound on Grabill Road when she tried to pass the buggy but cut back into her lane when she saw another vehicle approaching.

Officials said the crash occurred about 7:30 a.m. The buggy driver was taken to a hospital. The teen was not hurt, Stone said.

The names of the drivers were not available.

MetalX reopens after Monday fire

A Waterloo factory reopened Tuesday morning after a fire broke out in a pile of scrap metal near a shredder in-feed about noon Monday.

The fire was extinguished about midnight at MetalX LLC, according to a news release from the company at 295 S. Commerce Drive.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management and Homeland Security were on-site, the company said. There were no injuries or property damage, but two employees fighting the fire were treated for smoke inhalation and released, the company said.
