Man held in beating of ex-girlfriend

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

A Fort Wayne man is accused of beating his ex-girlfriend in front of children.

First, he gave all five children in the room a dollar and walked outside. When he re-entered the home, Brandon J. Stewart, 34, of the 4500 block of Werling Drive, flicked a cigarette at his ex-girlfriend and hit her Friday night, according to documents filed this week in Allen Superior Court.

One child told police ashes fell on his mother's shirt and the cigarette almost landed on his foot.

Stewart then yelled at the woman, and when she looked away, he punched her on the right side of her face with a closed fist, court records said.

The blow was so hard the woman fell onto a couch.

The victim was treated at a hospital and told detectives her jaw was fractured. A doctor told the victim the correct course of treatment would be to wire her jaw shut, court records said.

Stewart was being held at the Allen County Jail held in lieu of $15,000 bail. He is charged with three counts of domestic battery – one count resulting in serious bodily injury, one count due to a prior conviction involving battery and another count for being committed in the presence of children.
