One man is dead and another seriously injured as a result of a crash on East Washington Boulevard Tuesday night.
About 7:15 p.m., Fort Wayne police were called to the intersection of East Washington and Harmar Street just east of downtown. Emergency crews found a pickup truck that was badly damaged and had come to rest on a utility pole. The second vehicle, a passenger car, came to rest in the middle of the intersection.
Police said witnesses saw the car traveling west on East Washington at high speed and crash into the rear of the pickup truck, which was stopped in traffic just before the intersection. The force of the impact, police say, sent the pickup truck into the utility pole, which trapped the driver inside. Power to several nearby homes was knocked out because of the crash, police said.
The driver of the pickup truck died at the scene. The driver of the car was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. Investigators believe speed contributed to the crash.
The incident remains under investigation and traffic was diverted onto secondary streets Tuesday night to allow police to investigate and so repairs could be made to restore power.
