East Washington accident leaves 1 dead, 1 in hospital
DAVE GONG | The Journal Gazette
One man is dead and another seriously injured after a crash on East Washington Boulevard on Tuesday night.
About 7:15 p.m., Fort Wayne police were called to the intersection of Washington and Harmar Street just east of downtown.
At the scene, emergency crews found a pickup truck that was badly damaged that had come to rest on a utility pole. The second vehicle, a passenger car, was sitting in the middle of the intersection.
Police said witnesses saw the car traveling west on Washington at high speed and crash into the rear of the pickup truck, which was stopped in traffic just before the intersection.
The force of the impact, police said, sent the pickup truck into the utility pole, which trapped the driver inside. Power to several nearby homes was knocked out because of the crash, police said.
The driver of the pickup truck died at the scene. The driver of the car was transported to a hospital in serious condition. Investigators believe speed contributed to the crash.
The incident remains under investigation, and traffic was diverted Tuesday night to allow police to investigate and so repairs could be made to restore power.
