A man is dead and three others are in critical condition after two separate shootings within 15 hours in Fort Wayne on Sunday.
Three people were shot in a parking lot outside the American Legion building in the 700 block of East Lewis Street. When emergency responders arrived at the scene just before 2 a.m., they found a large crowd had gathered in the parking lot of the building, making it difficult for police to secure the area and collect evidence, Fort Wayne police said in a statement.
The statement said two men were found in the parking lot, both suffering from gunshot wounds, and were taken to a hospital, where one of the men later died. The second man was in critical condition.
A third victim was taken to another hospital in a private vehicle, police said. Reports from the hospital said that man was suffering from gunshot wounds and was in critical condition.
Witnesses told police there was some type of altercation inside involving several people. Multiple gunshots were heard from the parking lot. One witness who talked to a Journal Gazette reporter confirmed that there had been a fight inside the American Legion.
The witness also said that the person killed tried to defuse the situation but was shot several times. She was able to identify the victim and said he was a nice guy and married with children.
If the shooting death is ruled a homicide, it will be the 28th in Allen County this year.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Fort Wayne police at 427-1222 or Crime Stoppers at 436-7867.
The identity of the victim and the cause and manner of his death will be released later by the Allen County coroner's office, police said.
Another shooting Sunday left a man in critical condition, according to police dispatch. It happened about 4:45 p.m. in the 800 block of Hamilton Avenue.
