One man is dead after a disturbance at a home in the 800 block of Madison Street on the city's near south side where two other people were also shot and injured.
A man was taken to the hospital in critical condition and a woman in serious condition, Officer Chris Felton, public information spokesman for the Fort Wayne Police Department, said at the scene Thursday night.
The critical-injury victim is Jason Sandy, 41, and Rachel Burtz, 33, is the woman in serious condition, police said this morning. The Allen County coroner's office has not released the identity of the dead man.
The shooting took place inside a two-story white clapboard home about 9:15 p.m. When officers arrived, they found the victims outside the home.
One man who lives in the house next door said he saw a man lying in the grass and saw the injured woman run out of the home clutching her arm.
About 10:15 p.m., police entered the home next door led by a helmeted officer with a long gun after reports of an armed man inside. The home was cleared without incident.
“Somebody got smoked,” one man told a group of onlookers as they waited for news on the victim who died. Many said they knew him.
“Not my (friend), J,” another man said as he walked to the corner. “No wonder he ain't answering,” he said as he held up his cellphone. “That's one of my best friends.”
No suspects were arrested at the time. Fort Wayne police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 436-7867.
If the man's death is ruled a homicide, it will be the 33rd in Allen County this year.
