A veteran Fort Wayne police officer accidentally shot himself and another officer Tuesday during a training exercise, police said.
The officers were in the shooting room at the Public Safety Academy near Tillman Road and Lafayette Street about 4 p.m. when the shooting occurred, said Mark Bieker, city police public information officer.
The same bullet struck both officers, Bieker said. Neither officer was identified by police Tuesday night.
“There was an inadvertent discharge of an officer's weapon,” Bieker said.
The injured officers were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Bieker said.
Bieker would not say how many officers were in the room at the time of the shooting but said no recruits were there. Both officers were veteran officers, he said.
“We don't know how it happened,” Bieker said. “That's why the shooting team is here trying to re-create everything as well as talk to other officers to get an idea of what exactly took place.”
Bieker said he could not remember a similar incident in the 20 years he's been a police officer.
The Fort Wayne Police Department's Internal Affairs Division and shooting team were at the Public Safety Academy investigating the shooting Tuesday night, Bieker said.
