Teen charged in armed heist

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

An armed robbery that left a man with a bullet in his knee resulted in three felony charges filed against an 18-year-old Fort Wayne man.

Jeremy Alan Johnson of the 3400 block of Kendale Drive was charged Thursday with armed robbery, battery by means of a deadly weapon and resisting law enforcement using a vehicle to commit the offense.

He was being held at the Allen County Jail in lieu of $22,500 bail, according to a jail spokesman.

The shooting took place about 8:30 p.m. June 3 during an armed robbery. According to the victim, he was shot in the right leg by Johnson after he got into a green Chevrolet Impala parked at Lowe's on Coliseum Boulevard North to buy drugs. Johnson, sitting in the front passenger seat, pointed at two handguns at the victim, demanding his money and anything else he had, court documents said.

The victim was taken to a hospital where he was treated for a fractured femur at the knee. The injury required surgery to remove the bullet and repair damage to the bone, court documents said.

The victim said he was shot after he refused to give Johnson anything. During the police interview at the hospital, the victim was reported to be in “extreme pain” from the gunshot wound, court documents said.

The shooting was witnessed by two Lowe's customers who walked out of the store, court records said, then turned to each other and asked if they'd just heard a gunshot.

They both heard a man yell “I don't have any money!” They watched as a man got out of a green Chevy Impala and hobbled over to a Dodge Caravan, hoisting himself into the front passenger seat.

Johnson was arrested June 7 after the Fort Wayne Police Department's Gang and Violent Crimes Unit tried to pull him over.

According to court documents, Johnson floored a 2008 beige Ford Fusion, reaching speeds near 100 mph and eventually crashing the car into a tree at Country Court Estates Drive after running a traffic light at Lafayette Street and East Ferguson Road.

Two people inside the car were injured, court documents said.

Johnson has a court hearing Monday.
