JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

Fort Wayne police identified the officer involved in a shooting with an armed man as Jason Fuhrman, a 14-year department veteran.

The shooting occurred at 9:50 p.m. Monday when police responded to a report of an armed man acting suspiciously at Gateway Plaza strip mall in the 1500 block of Goshen Avenue, according to a release from the Fort Wayne Police Department.

A foot chase ensued when police said the actions of the gunman caused Fuhrman to shoot his gun, striking the man whom police have not identified.

Officers started first aid on the victim until paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital.

His injuries were not life-threatening.

According to personnel records, Fuhrmann was cleared in two past shooting incidents in 2009 and 2017.

The investigation is ongoing. Fuhrmann is on administrative leave per department policy.

Wabash City Police have not released details about the death of a 31-year-old city man found in the 200 block of East Main Street.

Richard Alex Watkins was discovered lying near the street at 11 p.m. Monday.
