Fort Wayne's second shooting in a little more than 48 hours left a man lying in a south-side alley Wednesday afternoon.
So far investigators have not released the name of the victim, who medics took from an alley off Baxter Street near Avondale Drive to a local hospital in critical condition, but police officers at the scene said they do have a name and are trying to verify the person's identity.
They also said it's too early to tell whether the most recent shooting is connected to a drive-by shooting on Southwest Anthony Wayne Drive that left a 50-year-old woman in critical condition Tuesday afternoon.
Officers and medics were called to the alley about 4:20 p.m. Wednesday after someone heard gunshots. The witness went outside and found the victim lying on the ground, suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
Investigators said they had a vague suspect description, but did not release any details. Police were canvassing the area and speaking to other potential witnesses who may have seen what happened.
"Any piece might be the missing piece that could complete the puzzle," Officer Jeremy Webb said.
Bloody clothes littered the alley, which was closed off by yellow police tape. A police dog tracked a scent that ended in the 4000 block of Warsaw Street. Residents in the surrounding neighborhood wandered from their homes and milled about in the afternoon heat, which reached into the high 80s as the afternoon stretched on.
On Tuesday, officers were called to the 4500 block of Southwest Anthony Wayne Drive, off South Anthony Boulevard, and found Maria Ramirez suffering from gunshot wounds in what appeared to be a drive-by shooting.
It was unclear whether Ramirez was the intended target, and she was listed in critical but stable condition Wednesday.
Both shootings remain under investigation.
