Girl, 5, dies after gunshot to face
Chris Meyers The Journal Gazette
She was only 5 years old.
Five short years to experience life.
On Friday night, a single bullet ended that life.
How the gun ended up pointed at her face has not been shared.
The only clue was that it was labeled by the Fort Wayne Police Department as a "negligent discharge of a gun."
The call for help came in about 10:05 p.m.
An entry for the shooting in city police dispatch records says it was an accidental shooting with the caller’s daughter struck in the face.
The girl was in critical condition when police arrived to the home at 1504 W. Fourth St., according to a statement from the police department.
She later died at a hospital.
Her name, and those of anyone else involved, have not yet been released by police or the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
Those in the home were interviewed by police as crime scene technicians worked to process the scene.
A crime scene van was at the home again Saturday morning.
The front porch light was still on at the two-story home, police tape surrounding the property and flapping in the harsh, cold wind.
City police had a marked car parked in front of the home and in the rear alley.
