Rebecca S. Green The Journal Gazette

A child is Allen County’s second homicide victim of the year.

On Monday, the Allen County Coroner’s office ruled the death of 5-year-old Mya Marie White a homicide.

The child was shot in the face Friday night in a home at 1504 W. 4th St., just after 10 p.m. She was taken to Lutheran Hospital where she died a short time later.

In the release issued Monday afternoon, the coroner’s office declared her death a homicide, caused by a gunshot wound.

Officials reminded the public in the release that the official determination of her death as a homicide means that it was the result of an act of another person.

How Mya ended up with a fatal gunshot wound is still under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Coroner’s Office and the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office.

No arrests have been made, and no charges have yet been filed.

The first homicide of 2015 was 34-year-old Hilario Segura. He was shot to death inside his home in the 3000 block of South Hanna Street as he put his children to bed on Jan. 21.

He was killed by a stray bullet fired during a gun battle a few hundred feet away in the area of Colerick Street and Weisser Park Avenue.

No arrests have been made in connection with Segura’s death.
