A mild, humid night shattered by gunfire.
There was a flurry of activity as people scattered from the violence.
After sorting through the commotion, police found two victims.
One was a man suffering from life-threatening injuries and the other a woman with less severe injuries.
The man would not survive.
He was Stacy D. Evans, a 30-year-old Michigan man who used to live in Fort Wayne, according the Allen County coroner’s office.
A Fort Wayne police officer in the area of Eden Green Apartments on Thursday night reported hearing gunfire about 10:30 p.m.
He found Evans and the woman, whom police have not identified, as the officer neared the 1300 block of Greene Street, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department.
Evans died a short time after he arrived at a hospital, police said.
His and the woman’s injuries were first described as apparent gunshot wounds, but further examination showed differently – at least for Evans.
The coroner’s office said he died from a stab wound to the neck. His death was the eighth homicide this year in Fort Wayne and Allen County.
The extent of the woman’s injuries and whether she was shot or stabbed, have not been released.
Detectives said witnesses in the area at the time of the attack told them there was an altercation before the gunshots were fired.
Several people were likely involved in the argument, police said.
Another shooting was reported amid the investigation into the attack on Evans and the woman.
This one was near the area of Oxford and Smith streets.
Police found a shooting victim nearby, who was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
