Dominique M. Mitchell, the 21-year-old Fort Wayne woman who was killed Wednesday night, didn’t live on Gay Street where she died, residents said Thursday.
The young woman was with about five people, standing and socializing in the middle of the street, they said, when someone drove by around 11 p.m. and shot her in the face.
Gaylia Norman, whose home was part of the street surrounded by police tape Wednesday night, said she didn’t hear the gunshot that killed Mitchell, but another family member did.
"He heard the girl scream," she said. Norman was getting ready to go to sleep when the place lit up with police cars and sirens, and after that she couldn’t get to sleep at all.
The Fort Wayne Police Department has said there is no suspect in the shooting, and there is little information, said Michael Joyner, FWPD public information officer.
"Other than the fact the victims were standing outside a vehicle in the 2400 block of Gay Street when they heard a loud bang, turned around and looked and realized she was down. That’s all we know. We don’t know if it was just a stray round or if she was the intended target."
Norman, holding her 14-month-old grandson Thursday, said she does not feel threatened living there.
The homes are new and the neighborhood is tidy.
"I’m starting to think someone crazy is running around shooting people," Norman said.
Mitchell is the 21st homicide victim in Allen County for 2016, according to the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
