Federal education secretary to visit Van Wert schools

ASHLEY SLOBODA | The Journal Gazette

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has accepted an invitation to visit Van Wert City Schools next week.

In a Facebook post Wednesday, the school district shared a news report about the April 20 event and wrote that it is honored to host her along with the presidents of the American Federation of Teachers and Ohio Federation of Teachers.

“We have been given the privilege of showing them the importance of public schools, particularly what makes Van Wert City Schools great!” the district posted on Facebook. “We … hope you join us in making them feel welcome.”

The district directed calls for further details to an American Federation of Teachers representative. He did not immediately return messages Wednesday.

In a statement, DeVos said she looks forward to visiting Van Wert's students, parents and teachers.

“Every parent should be able to send their children to a school that meets their unique needs, and for many parents, that is a public school,” DeVos said in a statement. “I support and celebrate all great schools.”

DeVos is a Michigan billionaire who has advocated for charter schools and school choice programs. Vice President Mike Pence cast the historic tiebreaking vote that confirmed her as education secretary in February.
