Eager to learn, unfairly tested

Math teacher Karen Rhoades calls it the most “despicable” thing she's ever done as a teacher. Emily Schwartz Keirns, who oversees the English Language Learners program for Fort Wayne Community Schools, said it is clearly the wrong thing to do to children.

Getting on board for kids Kim Fazio has changed her instructional approach to reach students in her eighth-grade math classes at Northwood Middle School.

Kim Fazio is a math teacher, mom, teammate, cheerleader and classroom manager extraordinaire. Until four years ago, she wore the roles a bit unevenly, clinging to the mind-set that if she taught it, they must learn it.

Northwood Middle School makes a good first home in Fort Wayne. For students newly arrived in the U.S., the school must seem like a safe and supportive place to grow accustomed to a new language, a new culture and new people.

Learning squeezes in Language arts teacher Haley Godfrey has no room of her own and moves teaching materials on a cart.

Look at a yearbook from Northwood Middle School’s early years and you are struck by how different the school looks today – and how it looks the same. While its enrollment has changed from all white to students of all colors and creeds, the building itself is unchanged, if a bit worn for wear.
