Ex-Railroader fills Rudy role for Musketeers

Remember Rudy Ruettiger, the legendary Notre Dame football walk-on who became the subject of a movie?

Hollywood hasn't called Matt Singleton yet, but his experience with Xavier University's basketball team this season features some of the same elements that endeared “Rudy” to sports fans.

Singleton was a star basketball player at Garrett High School. But when he went away to Xavier in Cincinnati three years ago, he joined the pep band as a drummer and concentrated on his pre-med studies.

As WANE-TV reported this week, Singleton joined Xavier's team this season as a senior. He's only played in a few games, but with March Madness in the air, Singleton is a member of a team ranked No. 3 in the nation.

He told WANE he still tries to give his teammates a lift, only now it's from the bench instead of from the band section.

“I would say that I'm pretty loud,” Singleton said.
