Giants closing in on acquiring Stanton

SAN FRANCISCO – Giants general manager Bobby Evans confirmed on San Francisco's flagship radio station KNBR that the club has reached the parameters of a potential trade for Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton.

Marlins CEO Derek Jeter said Tuesday that Miami has not decided whether to trade Stanton, still owed $295 million from his record $325 million, 13-year contract.

UCLA canceled Wednesday's game with Montana because of wildfires in the area.

Hornets coach out for health

Charlotte coach Steve Clifford will be away from the team for an undetermined period of time to deal with a “health issue.” The 56-year-old missed Monday night's game against te Orlando because he was not feeling well.


Associated Press honors Big Ten

Penn State's Saquon Barkley is the offensive player of the year for the second straight season and Iowa linebacker Josey Jewell is defensive player of the year on The Associated Press All-Big Ten Conference team. Wisconsin freshman running back Jonathan Taylor was voted newcomer of the year, and Paul Chryst was named coach of the year. Indiana had three players on the first team – receiver Simmie Cobbs, kicker Griffin Oakes and linebacker Tegray Scales. Purdue defensive tackle Gelen Robinson was named to the second team.

The Indiana Tech men's soccer team had three student-athletes, Andrew Higgins, Oswaldo Segura Diaz and Brennan Cochran, named to the United Soccer Coaches Mideast All-Region teams. ... IPFW women's volleyball junior setter Madison Jaqua was selected to the Summit League Academic All-League team. ... Five members of the Trine football team have been named All-North Region by The Thunder had one first-team representative in senior offensive lineman Mitchell Watts. Three were second team in juniors Lamar Carswell, Jeffery Barnett and Marcus Winters. Offensive lineman Andrew Hagar rounded out the Trine selections as a third-team pick. ... University of Indianapolis' Ruben Holcomb (Snider) was named to the AFCA Division II Coaches All-America first team. Holcomb got his second consecutive all-conference nod, earning All-GLVC first-team accolades. Holcomb was also named to the D2CCA All-Super Region 3 second team. ... Ball State sophomore forward Kyle Mallers (Carroll) was selected as the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week after averaging 12 points and 9.0 rebounds last week. ... Morris headed to Razorbacks

A source has told The Associated Press that Arkansas has hired SMU's Chad Morris to replace Bret Bielema as its head coach. Morris, 49, has agreed, the source said, to a six-year contract.

Snider, Leo players awarded

Snider defensive lineman Lawrence Johnson and Leo punter Ben VonGunten were named 2017 IndyStar Mr. Football award winners. Johnson, a Purdue recruit, had 50 tackles, seven for loss and three sacks, as a senior. VonGunten averaged 37.5 yards per punt and placed 10 of 21 inside the 20 and made 33 for 34 extra-point attempts.


Huntington North to honor Tackett

Huntington North graduate and pro bowler EJ Tackett will be honored before Saturday's varsity basketball game. The 2011 graduate won the 2009 Indiana State Championship and is on the PBA Tour.


Kaepernick given Ali Legacy award

Colin Kaepernick was given Sports Illustrated's Muhammad Ali Legacy Award on Tuesday night, promising that “with or without the NFL's platform, I will continue to work for the people.”
