USF celebrating title with public Jan. 16

Saint Francis will hold a celebration for its 2017 NAIA national football championship, the program's second in a row, at noon Jan. 16 at the Hutzell Center.

Fans and the community are invited to attend.

The Cougars finished 14-0 with a 24-13 win over Reinhardt (Georgia) in the title game Dec. 16 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Also, members of the championship team were recently honored by Victory Sports Network.

Kevin Donley was named the 2017 VSN National Coach of the Year, while running back Justin Green (offense) and linebacker Piercen Harnish (defense) were named VSN Players of the Year.

In addition, defensive tackle Eric Hemmelgarn and linebacker Eric Dunten were named VSN All-Americans, along with Green and Harnish.

Rodriguez out following claim

Arizona has fired football coach Rich Rodriguez after a notice of claim was filed with the state attorney general's office alleging he ran a hostile workplace. The Tucson Daily Star revealed the notice of claim after making a public-records request.

Bengals give Lewis extension

Coach Marvin Lewis got a two-year contract extension Tuesday. The agreement came after a second straight losing season and two days of discussions with owner Mike Brown.

Palmer retires after 15 seasons

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer is retiring after 15 NFL seasons.Palmer, 38, threw for 46,247 yards, 11th-most in NFL history, in a career with the Bengals, Oakland and Arizona.


US downs Russia, on to semifinals

Kieffer Bellows scored his second goal with 7:29 left in the third period and the United States defeated Russia 3-2 in a world junior quarterfinal Tuesday night. Kailer Yamamoto also had a goal, Joey Anderson added an empty-netter and Joseph Woll made 27 saves for the defending champion Americans, who will play Sweden in the semifinals on Thursday.
