TinCaps' offense not enough to earn win

The TinCaps pounded out 11 hits and had four players with two hits but lost 10-6 to Lake County on Wednesday in the final game of a three-game series at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.

The Captains (22-15) took a 3-0 lead after the first, scoring three runs on five singles and an error. Will Benson, Ruben Cardenas, and Miguel Jerez drove in the runs.

Fort Wayne (15-22) responded with a run in the second via a Blake Hunt double that drove home Dwanya Williams-Sutton. Hunt is tied for second on the TinCaps with six doubles this season. The catcher also finished the game with two hits, his first multihit game since April 24 against Bowling Green.

Ex-Spartan plays in golf tourney

The Bentley University golf team, which includes sophomore Ellis Yoder, a Homestead graduate, will play in the NCAA Division II men's golf championships in Daniels, West Virginia, from Monday through May 24.

PFW volleyball team honored

The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association announced that 13 of the 17 Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball players were selected to the Academic All-MIVA Team. The 13 Mastodons selected were Kade Bontrager, Alex Dickmann, Richie Diedrich, Tomas Gago, Troy Gooch, Max Hansen, Michael Keegan, Kolbie Knorr, Jacob Mailloux, Austin Neace, Tony Price, Shawn Trznadel and Pelegrin Vargas.

Purdue to face Fresno St. in '23

Purdue football has scheduled a matchup with Fresno State at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette on Sept. 2, 2023, to open that year's season, the Boilermakers announced. It will be the first-ever matchup between the teams.

Beckham skips out on practice

Odell Beckham Jr. was not at Cleveland's voluntary workout a day after showing up after a monthlong absence. Beckham had been in contact with the club while he was away and the team is comfortable with him leaving again.

Jets fire GM

The New York Jets fired general manager Mike Maccagnan and coach Adam Gase will serve as the acting general manager in his place.

ECHL's Monarchs halt operations

The Manchester Monarchs announced they were suspending operations, after an ECHL season that saw them lose to the Newfoundland Growers in the North Division finals.

Kane sets mark in US victory

Patrick Kane scored a goal and had two assists to become the United States' all-time leading scorer at the world hockey championship in 6-3 win over Britain.

Sabres get coach

Ralph Krueger was officially named the new coach of the Buffalo Sabres as the franchise seeks to return to the playoffs after an eight-year absence.

The owners of Maximum Security sued the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and race stewards, seeking to reverse the horse's disqualification for interference as Kentucky Derby winner.
