IPFW cruises past NAIA foe
Xzavier Taylor totaled 12 points and 12 rebounds and Bryson Scott scored 18 to lead IPFW past NAIA Concordia (Michigan) 92-59 on Saturday at the Gates Center.
The Mastodons (11-6) built a 34-6 lead shooting 13 of 22 (59 percent), including 6 of 12 from 3-point range. IPFW led 46-21 at halftime and took advantage of the Cardinals' 22 percent shooting (5 of 23).
The Mastodons finished with 36 field goals – 10 coming from 3-point range. Kason Harrell and Jordon King each scored 13 and Jairus Stevens added 10.
IPFW had a 34-21 rebounding advantage and remained undefeated at home at 8-0. The Mastodons have won 22 consecutive nonleague home games and start Summit League play Thursday at Oral Roberts.
Jalen Thompson led Concordia with 16 points on 4-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. Connor Phee hit 5 of 8 shots and scored 15, while Paul Zysk scored 10.
LOYOLA-CHICAGO 66, EVANSVILLE 59: In Chicago, Marques Townes scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half to help the Ramblers rally in Missouri Valley Conference play.
Townes hit 6 of 9 from the floor, including all three of his 3-pointers, and added five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Aundre Jackson came off the bench to score 18 for the Ramblers (11-3, 1-1), who ended a two-game skid.
Ryan Taylor knocked down half his 16 shots and scored 20 to pace the Purple Aces (10-5, 0-2). Dru Smith added 15 points and four steals and Blake Simmons scored 12.
Evansville led 28-20 after a cold-shooting first half. The Purple Aces shot 39 percent before intermission, while Loyola made just 36 percent, including 1 of 8 from 3-point range.
Donte Ingram's 3-pointer with 6:29 remaining gave the Ramblers their first lead of the second half 47-46.
WIGHT STATE 60, IUPUI 52: In Dayton, Grant Benzinger scored 16 points, including five in a span of 40 seconds to lift the Raiders in Horizon League play.
Benzinger knocked down a 3 that gave Wright State (10-5, 2-0) a 38-28 lead with 12:31 to play, but IUPUI chipped away with an 18-13 run over the next nine minutes and came as close as 48-46 when Evan Hall and Jaylen Minnett hit consecutive 3-pointers with 5:17 remaining.
Benzinger followed Hall's 3 with a jumper and Minnett's with a 3 of his own, pushing the lead back to five.
Minnett led the Jaguars (3-10, 0-2), who shot 18-for-51 (35 percent) with 11 points. and Ron Patterson added 10. IUPUI is in its first Horizon League season and is 0-9 on the road.
CENTRAL MICHIGAN 69, BALL STATE 65: In Muncie, the Cardinals dropped their Mid-American Conference opener, their first loss of the season.
Moriah Monaco led Ball State (11-1, 0-1) with 17 points. Frannie Frazier added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
