Mastodons fall in Summit League opener

TULSA, Okla. – Sam Kearns matched his career best with 21 points, and Albert Owens added 16 as Oral Roberts dominated throughout to beat IPFW 76-60 on Thursday night.
Kearns had 12 points in the first half as Oral Roberts (6-11, 2-0 Summit) took at 37-32 lead into the break and won the second period 39-28. IPFW closed to 45-38 after a Bryson Scott layup at the 16:49 mark.
Emmanuel Nzekwesi answered by hitting a jump shot that started a 15-3 run and the Golden Eagles coasted to the win.
Nzekwesi finished with 14 points, 14 rebounds and six assists.
Scott had 20 points and John Konchar added 19 for IPFW (11-7, 0-1).
ILLINOIS-CHICAGO 70, IUPUI 65: In Indianapolis, Marcus Ottey and Dikembe Dixson scored 19 points apiece as the Flames rallied from a 13-point deficit to snap an 11-game road losing streak.
UIC (6-10, 1-2 Horizon League) committed nine turnovers in the first 11-plus minutes as IUPUI opened a 24-11 lead on Aaron Brennan's 3-point play and trailed by nine points with fewer than 15 minutes left. An 11-3 spurt trimmed UIC's deficit to 51-50 with seven minutes left.
Brennan led IUPUI (4-11, 1-3) with 18 points.
ORAL ROBERTS 73, IPFW 48: At the Gates Center, Maria Martianez scored a game-high 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting to lead the Golden Eagles in the Summit League game.
DeJour Young scored 12 points and Peyton Fallis 10 to lead the Mastodons (3-12, 0-2). IPFW shot 40 percent (18 of 45) from the field. Oral Roberts (10-5, 2-0) shot 53.7 percent (29 of 54).
