Volleyball begins today for Cougars

The Saint Francis women's volleyball team opens its 45th season in California today with an eye on back-to-back Crossroads League championships in 2019.

Sixth-year coach Scott Haddix will send his Cougars against 13th-ranked Rocky Mountain (Montana) in the Summer Slam hosted by Hope International University in Fullerton, California.

Saint Francis finished 30-9 overall, 15-3 in the Crossroads League to tie for the regular-season crown.

Kendra Siefring and Marian Pelak return after earning 2018 NAIA All-America selection.

Both were named to the honorable mention section of the squad. They joined Allison Horn as the only Saint Francis members to earn All-America status.

Horn, who is a member of the Saint Francis Athletic Hall of Fame, was All-America in 2003 as a senior outside hitter.

Pelak, who was Crossroads League Setter of the Year, delivered 1,413 assists as a sophomore in 2018, No. 4 in NAIA Top 50 final statistics. Siefring led NAIA in blocks with 135.

After finishing its first day of action against Hope International, Saint Francis then plays No. 27 Embry Riddle and No. 15 Westmont (Calif.) on Thursday.
