Wimbush's status game-day decision

Notre Dame quarterback Brandon Wimbush will be a game-day decision for Saturday’s contest at North Carolina, according to an update provided Thursday by coach Brian Kelly.

Wimbush was diagnosed earlier in the week with a grade 1 strain in his right foot.

“We’ll go day to day and then make the decision on game day,” Kelly said. “If he doesn’t start, he would (be the backup). He’s going to be able to do something.”

Wimbush practiced Thursday and “did some good things” in Kelly’s assessment.

The injury is believed to have occurred in last Saturday’s win over Miami (Ohio) at Notre Dame Stadium. Wimbush has six touchdown passes and eight TD runs on the season.

Ian Book would make his first career start if No. 21 Notre Dame (4-1) opts to hold back Wimbush. Book received more repetitions this week in practice.

“He’s had a good week and been effective,” Kelly said. “We give our second quarterback a lot of reps, so he knows the offense.”

However, Kelly said Wimbush remains on schedule health-wise.

“He’s where we hoped he would be,” Kelly said. “We expect more progress to be made in the next couple of days.”
