Notre Dame-North Carolina capsule

Journal Gazette

3 storylines

Notre Dame defense vs. Chazz Surratt: North Carolina's quarterback might be a freshman, but he's thrown five touchdown passes against two interceptions and has also run for four scores.

Injuries: Notre Dame starting quarterback Brandon Wimbush (foot) is questionable and a game-time decision. Backup defensive tackle Elijah Taylor (foot) and rotational wide receiver Freddy Canteen (shoulder) are out. ... For North Carolina, six starters (right tackle William Sweet, wide receivers Austin Proehl and Thomas Jackson, middle linebacker Andre Smith, tight end Carl Tucker and defensive end Tyler Powell) are out. Starting defensive tackle Jalen Dalton (leg) and No. 3 cornerback Corey Bell Jr. (undisclosed) are questionable.

C.J. Holmes vs. jitters: Notre Dame has elevated Holmes, a freshman tailback, from the scout team to the travel roster. He is expected to make his college debut today. “We wouldn't bring him up if we didn't feel he was ready to play,” Irish coach Brian Kelly said. “Our eye is on getting him involved with special teams and seeing if we can get him involved in our offense. He's a skilled player.”

Prediction: Notre Dame 31, North Carolina 17
