Case for Swanigan as county’s best
Purdue sophomore Caleb Swanigan, Homestead 2015 graduate, has been named Big Ten Player of the Year and voted first-team All-American by USA Today, Sporting News and NBC Sports. He is on the short list for NCAA Division I National Player of the Year.
I have followed local and area high school basketball since 1954. Is Caleb the best college basketball player ever to graduate from a Fort Wayne/Allen County high school? Over the past 62 years, I can recall dozens of excellent Division I college players from this city and Northeast Indiana. I cannot recall one selected as a consensus first-team All-American prior to Caleb. Have I overlooked someone? Is Caleb the best?
While I am stirring the pot, Fort Wayne and northeast Indiana high schools produced Willie Long (South Side), who played in the old ABA, but only three NBA players that I can remember: Henry James (North Side), Walter Jordan (Northrop), and Brad Miller (East Noble and Maine Central). Have there been any others? Any argument that Brad Miller, a three-time NBA All-Star, enjoyed the most distinguished professional basketball career of any player raised and schooled in this area?
