State soccer has record numbers

A record number of soccer teams will participate in the 24th IHSAA boys and girls state tournaments, the first year in a three-class format. The boys tournament will have 300 teams for the first time and 268 girls teams are entered, two more than last year's record.

Both the boys and girls tournaments will have 16 sectionals in each class Oct. 2-7. Regionals will be Oct. 14, semistates Oct. 21 at four sites and state finals Oct. 27-28 at both Butler and IUPUI.

Among area boys teams, Class A No. 3 Canterbury plays host to a sectional and opens against South Adams, 2A No. 16 Bellmont plays host to Leo in an opener, 2A No. 17 Concordia has Peru at Maconaquah and 2A No. 18 West Noble opens up with NorthWood at Wawasee. 

In area girls teams, 2A No. 6 DeKalb has West Noble at Lakeland, 2A No. 8 Bishop Dwenger plays Garrett at Columbia City, 2A No. 9 Bellmont has a first-round bye at Norwell, 3A No. 19 Huntington North opens up with Homestead, while No. 20 Warsaw plays the hosts in the South Side Sectional, and 1A No. 8 Blackhawk Christian plays host to a sectional opener against Canterbury.
