Homestead blanks Canterbury in tennis sectional semifinal
Homestead and Canterbury’s tennis teams came into Wednesday having combined to win 28 of their 35 matches this season. But it wasn't the evenly matched sectional semifinal that might have implied.
Homestead won 5-0 and didn’t lose a set, advancing to today’s final at Homestead against Bishop Luers.
David Heiney won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles over Nishanth Reddy. Thomas Weir didn’t lose a game at No. 2 singles against Shaan Patel. And at No. 3 singles, Daniel Gilbert beat Dhillon Patel 6-2, 6-4.
Homestead’s doubles teams – Bryant Zitlaw and Will Wilne, Tim Steiner and Nicolas Graber – won 24 of the 37 games they played.
Homestead is 16-1. Canterbury finished 13-7.
Bishop Luers advanced with a 3-2 victory over Wayne, which got both of its victories in doubles. The No. 1 singles match saw Cole Scheible beat Lwin Aung 6-0, 6-0. Johnny Woehnker and Charlie Burton won the other singles matches.
NORWELL SECTIONAL: In Ossian, Bellmont beat South Adams 4-1 and Adams Central defeated Huntington North by the same score in quarterfinal action.
South Adams’ lone victory came at No. 1 singles, where David Musselman beat Robby Ysidron 6-2, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Nick Teeple got a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Wes Stout.
Huntington North also got its victory at No. 1 singles, with Auden Eckert defeating Jaxson Rinkenberger 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, but Cameron Burkhart beat Matt Karst 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2.
CONCORDIA SECTIONAL: Bishop Dwenger defeated Concordia 5-0, paced by Andrew Nuerge’s 6-0, 6-0 victory over Gavin Seifert at No. 1 singles in a quarterfinal match. The closest match came at No. 2 doubles, where Nathan Busch and Braxton Miller beat Mason Pickett and Jordan Wright 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
CARROLL SECTIONAL: In quarterfinals, Leo beat Churubusco 5-0 and Snider downed Northrop by the same score.
Leo benefited from a No 3 singles forfeit and won every other game, including Eli Herran’s victory over Noah Grim at No. 1 singles. Snider lost only six games – all in doubles – and got a No. 1 singles victory from Nicholas Habig over Sam Acra.
DEKALB SECTIONAL: In Waterloo, semifinal action saw Angola beat Prairie Heights 5-0 and DeKalb oust Fremont 3-2. Angola lost only one game. DeKalb’s lone singles victory came from Landon Holwerda, who beat Quest Crotty 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
