Swanigan selected to U19 USA Basketball team
Homestead’s Caleb Swanigan has made the final 12-player roster for USA Basketball’s U19 team, it was announced Wednesday.
Swanigan, the reigning Mr. Basketball and an incoming Purdue freshman, will play for the American team in the FIBA World Championships June 27 to July 5 in Greece.
Future Purdue teammate Vince Edwards did not make the team.
The 2015 Indiana Mr. Basketball, Swanigan skipped the Indiana-Kentucky All-Star games last weekend to participate in the U19 training camp in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Swanigan was a part of the USA U17 team that won a gold medal in August in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Irwin moving on
Huntington North boys basketball coach Rob Irwin will become the athletic director at Greenwood.
Irwin was 32-37 in three seasons with the Vikings and 234-206 in 20 years overall. He was also the boys basketball coach at Whitko and Carroll and the athletic director at Whitko.
Cavs name coach
Heritage coach John Beckman is taking over for Wayne Kreiger as the girls basketball coach at Canterbury, the school announced.
Beckman was 55-52 in five seasons with the Patriots.
"We are excited to bring John on board at Canterbury and look forward to what the future holds," Canterbury athletic director Ken Harkenrider said. "The student-athletes have started working with him, and we know they will continue to focus on training and teamwork, taking the time to do things well, and enjoying the opportunity to play."
The Cavaliers have finished as the Class 2A state runner-up the last two years but will move up to 3A and will be without the graduated Darby Maggard and Katherine Smith.
