Indy 3 Komets 1
Komets lose preseason opener
The Komets want more shooters this season. And based on their first preseason game, Friday night in Indianapolis, they might have them.
Whether or not they have finishers remains to be seen.
The Komets totaled 39 shots on goal but lost 3-1 to the Indy Fuel at Indiana Farmers Coliseum in front of an announced crowd of 2,406.
Captain Jamie Schaafsma had the only Fort Wayne goal, tying it at 1 at 8:51 of the first period, and it was set up by newcomer Marc-Olivier Roy.
Tommy Olczyk gave the Fuel the lead 2:29 into the second period, and Will Smith's empty-net goal finished the scoring in the final minute.
Rookie goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulos started in net for the Komets and stopped 7 of 9 shots before being replaced 15:51 into the second period. Garrett Bartus stopped all 13 shots he faced in relief.
The Komets will take on the Fuel again tonight at Memorial Coliseum.
Note: Curtis Leonard, who had been re-signed by the Komets in the offseason, made the opening night roster of the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves.
