TinCaps start road trip with win

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Luis Almanzar hit his second home run of the season, Kelvin Melean doubled and singled twice, and starter Luis Patino threw five scoreless innings as the TinCaps topped the Cedar Rapids Kernels 8-4 on Wednesday night.

It was the first of a six-game, two-city road trip for Fort Wayne (44-45, 12-8 second half), which started the scoring in the first inning when Luis Campusano hit an RBI single to bring in leadoff hitter Jeisson Rosario, and Robbie Podorsky scored on a groundout by Esteury Ruiz.

The TinCaps led by as much as 8-0 after six innings.

Almanzar smacked a two-run home run in the fourth inning to make it 6-0. He scored a run in the sixth inning on an error, and Melean came home on a wild pitch for the second run of the sixth.

Patino (3-3) allowed three hits while striking out five and walking two to pick up the win.

Tyler Watson (2-4) went 52/3 innings, giving up eight runs and nine hits, struck out three and walked two.

The Kernels (45-44, 13-7) scored all four of their runs in the seventh inning off TinCaps reliever Austin Smith.

Evan Miller pitched the eighth inning for the TinCaps, and Travis Radke pitched the ninth.
