Late homers costly for TinCaps

Journal Gazette

Agustin Ruiz went 2 for 3 and was on base four times and Lee Solomon had a triple and drove in two, but the Dayton Dragons used a pair of late home runs to beat the TinCaps 4-3 at Fifth Third Park on Wednesday.

Fort Wayne (8-6) ended its six-game road trip 2-4 and dropped 2 of 3 in the series against the Dragons.

The TinCaps took a 2-1 lead in the sixth when Solomon grounded a single to right and Nick Gatewood scored, but it was Fort Wayne's only lead and Dayton quickly responded.

The Dragons tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a solo homer from Pablo Manzanero, his first of the season, and went in front for good in the same inning when Juan Martinez doubled home Bren Spillane. Jonathan Willems hit his first home run of the season to left in the seventh inning to make it 4-2 Dragons.

All three Dragons runs in the sixth and seventh came off reliever Adrian Martinez, who was making his first appearance of the season after being called up from extended spring training earlier in the week. He gave up three runs on four hits in two innings and took the loss and a blown save.

The TinCaps cut the deficit in half when Solomon tripled in Juan Fernandez in the eighth, but Tucupita Marcano popped up with Solomon representing the tying run, ending the threat. Fort Wayne went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

Right-hander Efrain Contreras was solid for the TinCaps, going five innings and giving up one run while striking out six and walking one. He lowered his ERA to 2.57.
