One person is dead following a house fire early today in Columbia City, emergency officials said.
At about 12:15 a.m., the Columbia City Fire Department was sent to a house fire in the 900 block of East Van Buren Street and Peabody Avenue.
When they arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames, along with firefighters from Columbia and Thorncreek township fire departments.
It took firefighters about three hours to bring the blaze under control. The State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire.
It's the first fire fatality in decades in Columbia City, Mayor Ryan Daniel said in a statement.
