Suspect in Tinsley slaying makes first court appearance

Matthew LeBlanc | The Journal Gazette

The Grabill man accused of killing and sexually assaulting 8-year-old April Tinsley in 1988 made his first appearance in court Monday.

John D. Miller, 59, is charged with murder, child molesting and criminal confinement. He said in Allen Superior Court he understood the charges but said nothing else.

Allen County prosecutors have until Thursday to file formal charges. Miller is being held without bond at the Allen County Jail.

April left her family's home in Fort Wayne on April 1, 1988, and was found dead three days later in DeKalb County. Miller was arrested Sunday after investigators used DNA and genealogical data to tie him to the case, a probable cause affidavit says.
