Guilty plea in Oct. shooting death

MATTHEW LEBLANC | The Journal Gazette
Deedee Barnett, 39, told police last year he shot Brian Lowe Jr. 31, in the head because the younger man "caused chaos in the neighborhood and yelled at people."
Barnett admitted to the killing this morning and pleaded guilty to a murder charge in Allen Superior Court. His trial had been set to start today.
According to court documents, Lowe was sitting in a friend's car in the 1000 block of Lake Avenue on Oct. 25 when Barnett walked over to the vehicle and fired a shot through the passenger-side window. Unharmed, the driver sped away and called police from a nearby parking lot.
Lowe died Oct. 27.
Barnett told investigators why he shot Lowe in an interview with detectives, according to a probable cause affidavit.
The murder charge had been coupled with a firearms enhancement, but prosecutors have agreed to drop the enhancement. He faces up to 65 years in prison.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 28.
