Neglect suspect arrested after months-long search

MATTHEW LEBLANC | The Journal Gazette

A Fort Wayne man wanted in the death of a 2-year-old girl in January was arrested today.

Shane A. Patton, 31, is charged in Allen Superior Court with two counts of felony neglect in the death of Jocelyn Belcher. The girl was found wrapped tightly in a blanket, and doctors told investigators she had injuries consistent with "both a hand over the mouth and neck."

The cause of death was neck compression, according to the Allen County coroner's office.

A warrant was issued for Patton's arrest in April, and a police spokesman said he was arrested around 11 a.m. today in the 2700 block of Chandler Drive.

The girl's mother, Crystal Belcher, 29, also is charged with two counts of felony neglect in the case. Her trial is scheduled to start Jan. 15.
