A woman and a child died early today in a house fire in Huntington, while a woman and two children escaped by jumping from a second-story window, the Huntington County coroner's office said today.

Huntington firefighters and police were called to a house fire in the 300 block of Lee Street shortly after 4 a.m., and police were told two people were not accounted for, the coroner's office said in a statement.

Police kicked in the rear door of the house but were unable to enter because of the intense flames, the statement said. It said firefighters' attempts to enter were also unsuccessful because of structural integrity issues.

The woman broke her ankle and suffered from smoke inhalation, the statement said. She and the children, whose injuries were not immediately available, were taken to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.

It took firefighters 1 1/2 hours to bring the fire under control, the statement said. It said a woman was found on the first floor and a child was found on the second floor.

Several cats and dogs in the residence at the time of the fire also died, the statement said.

The Huntington Fire Department and the state fire marshal's office are investigating the cause of the fire. The coroner's office plans to identify the woman and child who died after notification of relatives and the completion of autopsies.
